Turkey and Beef Salisbury Steak with Mushrooms

A healthy, delicious take on Salisbury steak with mushroom sauce.

Ingredients

Salisbury Steak

  • 1 lb extra lean ground beef
  • 1 lb extra lean ground turkey
  • 1 C chopped onions
  • 1/4 C chopped bella mushrooms
  • 3 sweet mini peppers chopped
  • 2 roma tomatoes skinned and chopped
  • 1 tbsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 eggs whisked
  • 1/2 C vegetable broth recipe can be found on our website
  • 2 C planko bread crumbs
  • 1 tbsp Italian seasoning
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • desired salt

Cream of Mushroom Soup

  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 16 ounces bella mushrooms
  • 2 C vegetable broth recipe can be found on our website
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 C flour
  • 8 sprigs fresh thyme
  • 2 C half and half
  • 1 tbsp dry sherry or white wine to deglaze
  • desired salt and pepper

Instructions

  • Add the beef and turkey to a mixing bowl.
  • Add the spices except for the Italian seasoning to the meat.
  • Add all the chopped vegetables to the meat and spice mixture.
  • Mix the eggs and vegetable broth and add to the mixture.
  • Mix the bread crumbs and Italian seasoning and add to the mixture.
  • After incorporating all items together, form card deck-size patties. Should make 8 patties.
  • Coat a skillet with extra virgin olive oil and heat.
  • Add patties and brown on each side.
  • Remove from pan.
  • Add extra virgin olive oil to pan and heat, adding mushrooms and onions.
  • Cook until all liquid has evaporated.
  • Use the sherry to deglaze the pan.
  • Mix the vegetable broth with the flour. Add all the spices and simmer for 10 minutes.
  • Add the half and half and bring the mixture to warm.
  • Add patties to the mixture and slowly heat. Cook another 20 minutes. Stirring occasionally.

Notes

Tip 1
If 8 patties is too many, they freeze raw really well.  Just make sure that they are frozen flat and then bagged. 
Tip 2
Cooking the mushrooms and onions until all liquid has evaporated will prevent the mushrooms from being rubbery. 
Tip 3
Whisking the half and half and flour in a measuring cup is a super easy way to get a nice smooth consistency.
